US President Donald Trump on Saturday, October 3, 2026, appointed Director of National Intelligence (DNI) J. Clayton to lead the White House’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) task force, also known as the “Super Intelligence Force.” The appointment comes as researchers continue to warn about the potential dangers of the rapidly advancing technology.

President Trump announced the decision on his social media platform Truth Social, stating, “I have entrusted the leadership of the Super Intelligence Force to Clayton. This is tasked with coordinating the federal government’s efforts. America should be ahead in ‘super intelligence’ in the world. Many say this is bigger than the Industrial Revolution and the internet. It will benefit and protect all Americans, and improve their lives.”

Clayton, who was confirmed as DNI by a 51-47 Senate vote on July 28, 2026, will oversee a task force expected to deliver a report within 120 days. This report will assess the risks and opportunities of AI and define Washington’s role in maintaining American leadership in the field.

New White House appointments

Separately, the White House on Friday, October 2, 2026, appointed 24-year-old Benny Ray Harmony as spokesperson and assistant press secretary. Harmony, who previously worked as a White House correspondent for ‘Real America’s Voice,’ is set to assume her new responsibilities on Monday, October 5, 2026.

Her appointment occurs while the position of White House Press Secretary remains vacant. The previous press secretary, Caroline Leavitt, resigned at the end of August 2026 to spend more time with her family after the birth of her second child. The Trump administration has not yet announced a permanent successor for the role.

Background on US AI strategy

President Trump began his second non-consecutive term on January 20, 2025, after winning the 2024 presidential election. His administration has consistently prioritised strengthening American leadership in AI. In 2019, he established the ‘American AI Initiative’ through Executive Order 13859. This was followed by Executive Order 14179 in January 2025, aimed at removing barriers to US leadership in AI, and Executive Order 14365 in December 2025, which directed federal agencies to develop an integrated national approach to AI policy.

Most recently, on September 29, 2026, Trump hosted a meeting with AI industry leaders at the White House, where he endorsed the voluntary creation of a ‘White House Agreement on Super Intelligence.’

Global and Nepali implications

The US initiative on AI has broader global implications, including for Nepal. The United States has pledged to support Nepal’s digital transformation and assist local innovators in leveraging AI for economic growth. In February 2026, India joined the US ‘Pax Silica’ initiative, which focuses on critical minerals, semiconductors, AI, and broader technology supply chains, a development considered significant for Nepal.

Furthermore, in June 2026, Nepal and India signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on AI-powered multilingual language technology and digital public infrastructure. The US Embassy in Nepal also announced a funding opportunity in July 2026 for the ‘American AI for Business Reporting and Investment Confidence Initiative,’ designed to train Nepali journalists in using American AI tools.

The AI task force is expected to strengthen existing incident-reporting mechanisms rather than implement new regulations. However, debates continue among researchers and policymakers regarding the potential threats of AI and the appropriate level of regulation. The specific recommendations of the task force’s report, and who will be the permanent White House Press Secretary, remain unknown.
