Convention background and Madhesh strategy
The Nepali Congress’s 15th General Convention was inaugurated on October 4, 2026, at Khula Manch, Kathmandu. While originally slated to conclude by October 8, 2026, the election process extended by an additional day.
Discussions during the convention also focused on strategies to reclaim the party’s influence in Madhesh Province. Ranjit Karna’s candidacy for the General Secretary position from Madhesh is seen as a test of the Congress’s strength in the region. To promote a message of equality, three separate halls—for Himalayan, Hilly, and Terai-Madhesh regions—were set up at Khula Manch for the closed session.
What happens next
Following the conclusion of voting, the ballot boxes will be securely managed, and the necessary procedures will be completed before vote counting begins. The Election Committee announced that counting would commence after the voting process was finished. Vote counting for the President’s position will take place today at the National Assembly Hall. As per our earlier report, counting for other positions will only begin after the results for the President are announced.
